Movie Review: Taegukgi (Korean)

**Rating: 7.5 out of 10**

Taegukgi

Directed by: Je-gyu Kang (2004)
Cast: Jang Dong-gun(Jin-tae), Won Bin (Jin-seok), Eun-ju Lee (Young-shin), Hyeong-jin Kong, Yeong-ran Lee, ...

I watched this movie at 10 pm. It is quite a long movie, I think... it's about 3 hours length... Hmm, at first I didn't really interested to watched it, since I thought it must be predictable and like any other war stories that emphasize the brutality of war (well, who doesn't know that war is cruel, right?) Hmm, but then I decided to make used of my so-little-spare time to see Jang Dong-gun's handsome face and Won Bin's cute look in other "perspective" :D

The movie is about 2 brothers named Jin-tae (the older one, played by Jang Dong-gun) and Jin -seok (played by Won Bin). They are so closed and loving. The older bro works as a shoe cleaner, while the younger one has just finished his high school years with a very impresive result. Suddenly, the Korean war burst... And there are rules that says any men age 18-30 should join the battle. And so Jin-seok are taken by force. His brother, who look for him, are finally taken also by the army. So the family left a mother, and a future daughter in-law (Jin-tae's fiancee) along with her 2 siblings... with no men around anymore.

Well, Jin-tae and Jin-seok fight together in war, while Jin-tae actually hope that his younger (and weaker, and smarter) bro are allowed to go home and study in university. Then one South Korea commander offers him that chance, by one way: collecting a Medal of Honour. What an offer, thought Jin-tae! And so he fights, he fights, he fights...harder and braver... Risking his life in the battle, with one hope that one day his brother would be free from the war obligation. But destiny says different. Along the way of receiving a Medal, Jin-tae must become a sadistic bastard and throw away his loving heart. And Jin-seok hate him for that (especially after Jin-tae killed their childhood North Korean buddy and made his fiancee killed in front of him). Well, short story... Jin-tae finds out that the South Korea commander was only fooled him around... He becomes an apostate and turns to North Korea side. One day Jin-seok finds out that his brother thought he is dead and go to North Korea in the middle of the battle to see his beloved brother...

Hmm, I personally think it's such a shame that a country is seperated and make their own battle. Until now, South Korea and North Korea haven't get along either. The special effect for this movie is above average for Asian techniques (but don't compare it with "Band of Brothers" or "Saving Private Ryan"). I think Won Bin here played better than Jang Dong-gun, becoming someone who is weak, a bit depedent to his brother and really sensitive and fragile inside. Good act, man! :)

So? Anyone interested to watch it?
