World Cup 2010: Let Africa Shines
Every four years, the world come together and agree to talk about one thing: soccer. This is the only time where people could focus and forget about differences. If it were a person, it would have won the nobel of peace. Well, let's talk about this year, shall we?
Serbia joined the World Cup for the first time. Before this, if you search on the internet about this country, probably all you got is about the war and conflicts. But today, you'll find a green field lies on the first page. This is why I love World Cup.
See... It's not about the game. It's about more than that. Do you know that the streets are much safer during the World Cup season? I remember walking home at 2 AM in the morning (four years ago) and found people gathered at guard posts and filled the street with joyful noise of the game. Do you know that strangers could instantly have something in common because they are bonded by the same spirit? My friends and I were in a cab after watching ENG vs USA at Plaza Indonesia, when the cab driver heard us talking and asked about the score. Do you know that this is the only time when you're excused for being late to work and allowed to entertain yourself for one whole month? The game itself is amazing... *I mean, 11 guys working together to put one ball into an 8-yard-wide/ 8-feet-high goal. They can use anything, except their hand (well, only Maradona is allowed to do so). The game can be played anywhere, because the rules are relatively simple and the cost to play is cheap. The hunks who play in the game is purely a sweet bonus for me.* But again, the impacts on the world is amazing.
This year will be the first time for me to watch North Korea in a World Cup (because I wasn't born yet in 1966). I am damn curious to see how they are gonna play against Brazil in Group G. Lols. If you don't know yet, I have this atrocious feeling towards North Korea and its ideology. Apart from that, this year I am gonna support Spain once again, since I hated so much when they lost to France in Germany 2006. My hope is, Iker Casillas and friends would do much better! It's not very common for a woman to like soccer, I know, but I got sucked into this euphoria when I wrote a World Cup edition for my school magazine in 1994 (I was the editor back then). I had this unbelievable fondness of Roberto Baggio (if you asked my family, they would tell you how crazy I was about him).
I collected every single item that I could possibly find about this Buddhist Italian libero (who has a unique hairstyle). I kept several albums to put news about him on newspaper *lols*... So you could imagine how ecstatic I was when Italy won, won, and kept on winning all the way to final. Although he missed the penalty kick and Italy lost, I continued the tradition of cheering for soccer every four year. Now, I don't have any favorite player after Raul Gonzales era... but I will still enjoy the game.
Here is the official song of World Cup 2010, "Waka Waka", featuring Shakira. Sanibonani, South Africa :)
